How to Report Fraud
Fraud is when someone uses criminal deception in order to make a financial or a personal gain. This could be by stealing information that can be used, or perhaps even scamming someone in order to encourage them to send money to them. Unfortunately, it seems that both fraud and scams are on the rise.
If you find yourself a victim of fraud, then there are particular things that you need to do in order to limit the damage that can be done. To help you, we have put together our guide on what you need to do in order to report fraud.
There are online organisations that can give you more detailed information about what you can do to help prevent instances of fraud. Cifas is a not-for-profit company that offer consumers and businesses advice and resources.
The things you should do immediately
Before you even begin to report a case of fraud, it is vitally important that you make sure that you protect yourself as much as possible. You need to speak to your bank to make sure that you can stop the payments that are being made to the person who has committed fraud to claim the money from you. You should also be aware that there could be a follow-up scam, you may be contacted by a company who claim that they will be able to get your money back, only to steal more from you.
Report to the police if it is a dangerous
In the most part, any case of fraud should be reported to Action Fraud, however, there are sometimes cases when you feel that you, or someone close to you is in danger. If this is the case, then you need to make sure that you call 999 and report it is an emergency.
You should also speak to the police (however, not as a 999 call) if the fraud is still in progress, or has occurred in the last 24 hours, also if you know who the suspect is and that they reside in the UK. You will also want to speak to the police if you think that they are going to need to preserve any evidence that can help the prosecution.
Reporting online fraud and scam emails
One of the most common ways to scam people in this modern world is via email or websites. If this happens to you, then you need to speak to Action Fraud who can help you to not only close down the website or email that is being used to scam as well as help you to try and gain your money back.
There are a variety of other ways that you can be scammed, so, when it comes to fraud, it is important that you keep your wits about you. If you feel uneasy about anything that you are being asked, or you feel your money or information is in danger, then make sure that you report it and do not pass any information over. If it is innocent, then it will soon be found out, and if it is not then you may have just protected yourself and other people too.
